Animal Adaptation for a specific environment

Organism in both photos: African Penguin- Spheniscus demersus

The penguin's webbed feet, with its location in the back of the body, gives it a shape which lessens the resistance of water as it swims. The position of the feet also allows it steer in the water, as well as walk on land.

Bare patches of skin with no feathers, called heat windows, around the eyes allows excess heat to escape. This helps the penguin remain cool. When the penguin is warm, these patches tend to turn pink.

Both photos taken at: 1 Central Wharf, Boston, MA
